The Pulp Fiction Index - Part II

This weekend we turn back to Pulp Fiction (1994), and continue to build our Pulp Fiction Index. If you missed last weekend's edition, we featured hitmen Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield. Picking up right where we left off, we now turn to their beloved and enduring boss, Mr. Marsellus Wallace played by Ving Rhames.

Marsellus is the man in charge, and we don't know too much about him - for the most part he is shrouded in mystery. For example, what's with the band-aid on the back of his neck? Didn't that make you want to know why he had it on - was it a bad cut or maybe a blemish?

Pulp Fiction We don't know where Marsellus grew up, or how he came into power. If I guessed, I would say that he's straight out of Compton. It's fitting that Marsellus would invest in Compton Petroleum (CMZ)

Marsellus WallaceNever judge a book by its cover, Compton Petroleum is not the home of our good friends from NWA (do not confuse with Northwest Airlines), they are based out of Alberta, Canada. Just last August they reported a decent quarter with net earnings of $69 million -- a 212% increase from Q2 2005. The stock has come down since the summer and receives little coverage and analysis. Compton could be ready to cash in on their 96% success rate of tapping 58 new wells during Q2 06. However, they are at the mercy of lower oil and gas prices; a risk factor to consider if prices continue to level off.

Compton Petrol is currently trading in the lower end of its 52-week range, thanks to a cooling energy sector among other things. I have a feeling Marsellus isn't too worried about that though, he has the patience and discipline to wait until things turn back around. Compton is set to report Q3 2006 on November 13th. This could be an interesting one to watch.
